San Franciscos Washington Square Park is one of the cities oldest park, dating to 1847. It may be hard to believe today, but the area was originally a ranch, owned by Juana Briones who grew potatoes and raised cattle there. She was also a traditional medical practitioner, a Curandero.
She is considered the Mother of San Francisco for personally helping to develop the city.
She then went on to help develop Palo Alto.
