All emergency responders need to be ready for all kinds of emergencies and all emergency stations need to have back up contingency plans for any kind of situations. San Francisco Fire Departments newest back up plan is so new, it just may be the very first of its kind in the whole world, an actual floating fire station at Pier 22 and One Half. Although their department does have fire boats, three to be exact, as do many coastal fire departments as well as Coast Guards, they all use land based ports, which can get severely damaged during very very high King Tides or earthquakes. This Floating Fire Station is anchored to a special floating barge which is what enables it to float. It opened in March 2022, behind the original pier station number 35, both under the Bay Bridge, which opened one hundred years earlier. This new one is equipped with a special lift for carrying and storing the three fire boats on this barge. Being a barge, it can also be towed as needed in special emergencies to other locations. As seen 4 October 2023.
