Because of the San Francisco Gold Rush, and a lot of money coming into the city, there was an increased need for good banking. One of those was Pioche et Bayerque Bank.
Pioche et Bayerque financed many of the early railroads too, including the San Francisco Market Street Railroad, the precursor of todays transit system, MUNI. In addition, the San Francisco Gas Work, the predecessor of todays public utility.
Although the building did survive the San Francisco 1906 earthquake, it did not survive San Francisco 1964, when it was torn down and replaced with this more modern building.
As seen 13 July 2022.
