Elmina, a small fishing town in southern Ghana (western Africa), near Cape Coast. It is an important historical place, with old colonial architecture and a medieval castle and a fort. In the past, Elmina castle served as a colonial fortress that controlled a trade between Western Africa and Europe. Later it served as a departure point for slave ships. Nowadays, Elmina is famous for its morning fish market that is located in a harbour close to Elmina castle. At dawn, hundreds of wooden colourful boats return from the oceanic trips with fish catch. Fish is sold directly from boats and fishermen compete vividly for customers. The market dies out before middle-day heats. After that fishermen dock in the harbour, rest, clean their boats, repair nets and bath in heavily polluted waters.
