Stock Photo: Stunning African Girl With A Tribal Scar

ID 22493575 © Trzaska | Megapixl.com

A young African girl in Sonyon, a flat-roofed village east of Bole town in North-Western Ghana (Western Africa). She has a ritual scare on her cheek that marks her tribal identity. Scarification of faces has been long practiced in Akan societies of Ghana, thought nowadays the tradition becomes less common. The community in Sonyon is known for its bizarre architecture - flat-roofed houses attached to each other, forming platforms on roofs for walking and spending time. Access to the houses is through their roofs and with the use of wooden ladders. In the past, these architectural features served as defensive traits against animals and enemies.
