The Zanzibar red colobus (Piliocolobus kirkii) is a rare and endangered species of monkey that is unique to coast of Tanzania. Named after Sir John Kirk, the British Resident of Zanzibar who first discovered it, this primate is also referred to as Kirk's red colobus. Despite being adopted as the flagship species for conservation efforts in Zanzibar in the mid-1990s, the Zanzibar red colobus remains at risk of extinction.
