The only mine of this type operating in Poland. The beginnings of chalk exploitation in Mielnik date back to the 16th century. Initially, it was mined for construction purposes using the so-called "povertyshafts". Until 1952, it was manual mining used exclusively for the needs of local residents. Since the mid-20th century exploitation on an industrial scale began. A modern processing plant was also built. Today, the annual output of chalk is approximately 80,000. tone. In the case of individual visitors or lack of permission to enter, the entire mine area is best visible from Duboisa Street (Observation Terrace).
