It all started when Giovanni Giotta and his family emigrated to San Francisco in 1951. The family came from Rovigno in what is now a part of Croatia. It is very close to Trieste, which was famous for espresso, and Giovanni would visit often. Although Giovanni was a fisherman by trade, which he learned from his father, the only job he was able to get on his arrival here was as a window washer, which he gladly accepted, and sang while doing so. When the opportunity arose for him to buy a coffee shop on Vallejo Street named Piccola Cafe,he jumped for it,buying it in 1956. They changed the name to Caffe Trieste, and became the first cafe on the whole west coast to sell espresso, not the then popular American instant coffee. Not only is the Caffe Trieste Saturday Concert Series in itself also world famous, the cafe is also the location where Francis Ford Coppola wrote most of the manuscript for Godfather. As seen 15 February 2023.
