Balance Street is another one of those very tiny, one block long alleys in San Francisco.
With the huge explosion in population in the city due to the Gold Rush, whole ships were being abandoned right at the waters edge. More land was desperately needed, so many of those abandoned ships were simply sunk where they were and used as land fill.
One such ship was called `Balance` and it still lays under the very alley that bears its name today.
