The Atherton House was built between 1881-1882 for the widow of Faxon Atherton, Dominga Atherton. Their daughter in law, the novelist Gertrude Atherton, used the home in many of her own works.The upscale town of Atherton, in San Mateo California is named in honor of Faxon Atherton, who became a citizen of San Mateo county.
