The word Taroko or Daloko was originally the self-proclaimed Truku of the Taroko people. Around the 16th century, the Seediq people crossed the Central Mountains from Nantou and moved to the Liwu River and Papaya River basins in Hualien. Later, the people living in Hualien developed a self-identity and called themselves Taroko. Its original pronunciation is Truku, and it was called Taroko during the Japanese occupation. The name Taroko was also named because the Taroko people lived here.
