Native to South Africa, perennial, fast growing, reaching up to 3 meters in height. Flowers produced singly in leaf axils. Each flower emerges from a small yellow-green calyx, enclosed in 2 large, protruding, hairy green bracts. The trumpet-shaped corolla opens into five petals in shades of yellow or orange with a dark center, there are also varieties of white, pink, red and cream flowers. They appear almost all year round, with greater intensity between late summer and early autumn. They are pollinated by bees and attract hummingbirds. Fruits are capsules and when dry, they present explosive dehiscence, with the ability to throw the seeds a few meters from the mother plant. In gardens it is an excellent option for covering ravines, fences, railings and for growing in pots with small structures, such as trellises and arches.
