The diatryma was a large, flightless bird that lived in North America and Europe during the Eocene epoch, from about 56 to 37 million years ago. It was the largest bird of its time, reaching heights of up to 10 feet (3 meters) and weights of up to 400 pounds (180 kilograms). It had a long, powerful neck and a sharp, hooked beak, suggesting that it was a predator.
