Masada is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Israel. It is an ancient fortress built on a rock in the Judean Desert, about 100 kilometers south of Jerusalem. The fortress was built by Herod the Great in the first century BC, and it was used as a palace and a refuge for the Jewish people during the First Jewish-Roman War.
