The building began in1456 as the Ancient Monastery of Corpus Domini, founded by Saint Catherine of Bologna. It was destined to house a barracks of the Napoleonic army from 1812 to 1816. In 1866 it was partially devolved to the Military State which named it after General Enrico Cialdini, a native of Castelvetro di Modena. Subsequently it was the headquarters of the 35th Pistoia infantry regiment. It was used as a shelter for displaced people from Bologna after the Second World War, from 1956 to 2007.
