Like many cities and town, both large and small, all around the world in the early 1900`s, San Francisco had many small and independently owned neighborhood movie theaters.
But by the mid 1950`s, families started moving to the suburbs, and buying new televisions sets.
This combination caused the downward spiral of the family run movie theater.
One such theater in San Francisco was `The Haight`, on the corner of Haight and Cole Streets. This was sold in 1964, and the new owners were the first to start showing gay themed films. This did not go over too well with the locals, causing the theater to sit vacant for a few years.
When it reopened in 1967 as a concert and dance theater, as a play on words of what is was most recently, it was named `The Straight Theater`. By 1970 the area deteriorated so badly, it was shut down completely, then demolished in 1981.
After the Loma Prieta quake of 1989 demolished the Goodwills headquarters at Fifth and Howard Streets, they were able to move into the brand new building here, with apartments upstairs.
