Eclectic singer, songwriter, and musician, Shlomo Carlebach (center), plays with his band mates in Jerusalem, Israel, in 1986. Carlebach was born in Berlin, Germany, in 1925 and lived a secular life after moving to the United States. He rediscovered his roots in Judaism and became more devout and was a teacher, a spiritual guide and freethinker. He lived in northern California for some years and explored diverse musical and cultural expressions. For several years he had a very close relationship with singer Nina Simone. Carlebach lived in Israel as well. He died in New York City in 1994 at the age of 69.
