The origin of the shrine is very old.According to the Hikawa Daimyojin Hosenji Engi written in Keicho 10, Susanowo-no-mikoto was invoked here during the eastern expedition of Takezun-no-Mikoto, a prince in the reign of Emperor Keiko. In the precincts of the temple, there are the remains of a sumo wrestling ring of Kin-O Sumo, one of the three major sumo tournaments held in the suburbs of Edo (Tokyo).
