The Grotto of Massabielle, or the Cave of the Apparitions, is the very religious heart of the Sanctuaries in Lourdes where the peasant girl Bernadette Soubirous is said to have witnessed the 18 apparitions of the Virgin in 1858. Located at the foot of limestone cliff, a few meters above the river Gave de Pau, the site and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes is now one of the world's most important sites of pilgrimage and religious tourism.
