When the Presidio San Francisco opened in 1776,wood frame buildings with indoor wood or coal burning stoves for heat and cooking were the norm at the time. This combination caused many unfortunate fires and deaths. One such tragedy occurred in 1915,when the home of the commander,General John Pershing caught on fire caused by an unattended fireplace. The Generals wife and four of five of their children all fell victim to the tragedy. Francis Warren,Senator from Wyoming and father in Law to the General, helped establish a permanent fire station at the Presidio in 1917,with a professionally trained staff, the first for the US Army. As seen 23 January 2018.
