Established in 1859, the Singapore Botanic Gardens is the only tropical garden to be honored as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in recognition for its role in the region's rubber trade and for its tropical colonial garden landscape. Located at the fringe of the city's Orchard Road shopping district, it houses more than 10,000 species of flora, spread over its area of 82 hectares. The Eco Lake mimics the natural swamp habitat of the region, featuring both mangrove and fresh water species.
