Originally the home of the Jose Theater in San Francisco when this building opened in 1913,the theater closed in 1919. In 1986 during the height of the AIDS epidemic, local gay activist Cleve Jones made a quilt panel for his recently lost friend Marvin Feldman which became the bases for the whole of the AIDS memorial quilt. In June 1987 Jones and others came to this store front to formally organize the Names Project and understand what was going on. When it was displayed at that years Gay Lesbian Pride Parade it had 40 panels. It has since grown to 50,000 panels, weighing 54 tons, nearly 49,000K! Since 2001 the whole of the Names Project has been in Atlanta Georgia with space provided by the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this space is now a seafood restaurant since 2012.
