San Franciscos geography is known for two things, hill and landfill. There are in fact, 47 hills in this one small city. And with the exploding population from the Gold Rush of 1849, more land was greatly needed for the quickly growing population. Originally, many of the ships those gold seekers came on, being abandoned by their own crew, were deliberately sunk along the coast line to become landfill. Many of those ships are still down there, turning up during new digs. This plaque with map indicates just how far the shoreline was extended over time.
