Nymphaea lotus, popularly known as white water lily, white lotus, egypt lotus, egypt sacred lotus and egypt sacred lotus, is an aquatic flowering plant belonging to the Nymphaeaceae family. It is native to East Africa and Southeast Asia, where it prefers still, clear, warm and slightly acidic waters. This species of water lily has leaves that are submerged and others that float above the water. It has a perennial habit and can grow up to 45 cm in height. The leaves are rounded, serrated and hollowed out at the base. Flower buds rise above the water level, and only then do they bloom. Its white flower, sometimes dyed pink, is known to open at night and close in the morning, staying that way until dusk. The flowers can reach up to 25 centimeters in diameter. Remains of flowers of this species were found in the burial chamber of Ramesses II. Its fruits, known as dome, are edible.
