Volkswagens, or VW's as they were better known, were a standard mode of transportation for people from all walks of life. Teenagers, college students, and young adults were particularly fond of them. They were no frills except the optional radio. Power was provided by a hortizontally opposed four cylinder engine similar to the engine in the Porche of that era. The transmission was a four speed manual. There were many performance items that could be added to improve horsepower and handling. A Porche racing clutch fit in my 1963 VW, maling it possible to "burn rubber". It cost $3.00 a week to fill the gas tank.
