The Volkswagen Typ 1 , better known as the Beetle in Italy ( in German Käfer , also called ladybirds in France, Spain Escarabajo , Beetle or Bug in Britain and the United States , Vocho Fusca in Brazil and Mexico ) , is an automobile compact produced by Volkswagen from 1938 to 2003 . It is certainly the most well-known German car in the world , becoming a symbol of the rebirth of German industry after World War II and the first Volkswagen ever. Currently holds the record for the longest car in the world , having been produced continuously for sixty-five. Moreover, it has long held the record for best-selling car in the world, with 21,529,464 copies , and is currently the fourth car in the world by number of units produced , after Toyota Corolla, Ford F -150 and Volkswagen Golf.
