The male human ribcage consists of twelve pairs of ribs that curve around the chest to provide protection to the heart, lungs, and other vital organs. The first seven pairs of ribs are called true ribs, while the next three pairs are called false ribs. The last two pairs of ribs are known as floating ribs. Each rib has two parts: the head and the shaft.Head: This is the curved part of the rib that articulates with the thoracic vertebrae in the spine.Shaft: This is the long, thin part of the rib that curves around the chest. The ribs are attached to the sternum or breastbone in the front of the chest and to the thoracic vertebrae in the back. The first seven pairs of ribs are attached directly to the sternum by costal cartilage, while the next three pairs are attached to the sternum indirectly by sharing a common piece of cartilage with the rib above it.
