The quadriceps femoris muscle, also known as the quads, is a large muscle located in the front of the thigh. It is the primary extensor muscle of the knee and is essential for walking, running, jumping, and other lower body movements. The quadriceps femoris muscle is composed of four distinct heads:Rectus femoris: This is the most superficial of the quadriceps muscles and is located in the middle of the thigh. It originates from the ilium bone in the pelvis and inserts into the patella (kneecap) and tibial tuberosity via the patellar tendon.Vastus lateralis: This is the largest and most powerful of the quadriceps muscles and is located on the lateral side of the thigh. It originates from the femur bone and inserts into the patella and tibial tuberosity via the patellar tendon.Vastus medialis: This is located on the medial side of the thigh, and its fibers are angled obliquely. It originates from the femur bone and inserts into the patella and tibial tuberosity via the patellar tendon.Vastus intermedius: This muscle lies deep to the rectus femoris muscle and is located on the anterior and lateral aspect of the femur bone. It originates from the femur bone and inserts into the patella and tibial tuberosity via the patellar tendon.
