Empresses and Grand Duchesses were served by a whole staff of female servants. The intermediate position between the retinue and the courtiers was occupied by the chamber Frau. These ladies were responsible for the wardrobe of the highest personages. In addition, the servants at the court consisted of camera-jungfers and camera-medchen – servants of a lower rank. Even for these positions, the girls were selected very carefully, they were educated and knew languages. They were engaged in the morning and evening toilet of their mistresses, made simple hairstyles that did not require the skill of a hairdresser, made beds… In the palace, some of them had rooms located directly under the wardrobe of the highest personages. There were also ironing girls and dressmakers at the wardrobe, who put the dresses in order and, if necessary, could make changes to the finished outfit.
