Stock Photo: Juvenile Double Crested Cormorant 5

ID 255029700 © Peachpappa | Megapixl.com

This Juvenile Double crested cormorant, Nannopterum auritum, is found in the Carpinteria Salt Marsh. They are aquatic birds, but not at all related to ducks. Unlike most aquatic birds, they are not really water proof. They must stand in the sun, usually with wings out stretched, in order to dry off. This seems to enable them to swim faster, and better. You can tell the juvenile because the coloring is more mottled black and white, which turns all black with adults. As seen 15 August 2022.
