Julie Harris, seen here as Emily Dickinson in a road production in Chicago (ca. 1981) of Broadway's The Belle of Amherst, was known as the first lady of the American theater. Nominated for 10 Tonys she won 5 in the leading actress category for her work in: I am a Camera (1952), The Lark (1956), Forty Carats (1969), The Last of Mrs. Lincoln (1973), and The Belle of Amherst (1977). She also received an unprecedented 6th Tony for Lifetime Achievement in the theater in 2002. She appeared in numerous tv shows, such as Knots Landing, won an Emmy, and appeared in films such as East of Eden. Harris, thrice divorced and mother of a son, died at her home in Chatham, Massachusetts, on August 24, 2013 at age 87.
