Idelle Goode, head of Chicago's Office for Senior Citizens and Handicapped shmoozes with her boss, Mayor Jane Byrne, in the lobby of City Hall on Christmas Day, 1979, In 1979 Byrne became the first and only female elected mayor of Chicago. The Democratic mayor served one term before being beaten in the Democratic primary by Harold Washington in 1983. Feisty and outspoken, Byrne died at 81 on November 14, 2014.
