Much of the area of downtown San Francisco is built up on landfill, when most of that area was still under water. To make trade with the arriving ships easier and faster, a wharf was erected, with all sorts of shops of the day. In 1908, the founder of University of California, Berkeley Architecture School, John Howard, was brought on to design this new building. The building has gone through, is still going through changes. During some excavation for expansion in 1989, artifacts from one of the forgotten stores from when this was a pier, were dug up. These, along with others, are on display inside the building.
