All new things have someone who was the original creator of it. With the Rainbow Pride Flag, now long associated with the Gay and Lesbian Rights Movement, that someone was Gilbert Baker. Originally from Kansas,he came to San Francisco in the early 1970's because of the growing Gay and Lesbian Movement. He was then also stationed here for two years for his military service,as a medic. It was during this period that he also learned to sew,and decided to stay. It was in 1978 that he created that very first Pride Flag, with all hand dyed strips. It also originally had eight colors not six,but because of the difficulty in reproducing that, economically and quickly in quantity, was so difficult, two colors got dropped. But over time, more colors got added in. This building on 17th Street in the Castro district was used as a meeting place in the 1980's during the AIDS epidemic as it spread throughout the neighborhood, and the world. April Berger,a now local artist painted these murals in 2017,in tribute to Gilbert Baker who died that year. As seen 24 March 2023.
