It is a species that originated as a result of spontaneous crossbreeding between two apple trees growing wild in the Caucasus - Malus pumila Mill and Malus sylvestris Mill , and then as a result of human breeding efforts supplemented with genes from several other naturally occurring species in Asia and Europe. It is among the most popular fruit trees in cultivation in the temperate climate zone.
