Lux Helsinki light installations took place between 31.12.2011 and 9.1.2012 and brought light to the darkest time of the year. This free-of-charge city event presented five light installations plus fire art performances. Installation in this picture is rubix xpress by Matti Jykylä. The inspiration for the light installation “rubix xpress†was the famous 3D mechanical puzzle invented in 1974 by Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture Ernő Rubik. As a child, Matti Jykylä himself was never able to solve the puzzle. The light installation was based on a video in which a 6-year-old Chinese boy solves the puzzle in 37 seconds. This feat was repeated in the Senate Square in a slowed down version, culminating in the successful completion of the puzzle. The light installation utilized changes and movement in light and incorporated music that was especially composed for the work. Helsinki is a design capital of Europe in 2012.
