Returning at the beginning of the breeding season in October the Chinstraps swim to the ice edge then march across the sea ice to their nesting sites. Howling winds and falling snow made them appear, ghostlike out of the whiteness of the surrounding landscape. Some came carrying pebbles for their nests that were still buried under thick snow.
