Free business was destroyed in Cambodia by Pol Pots regime. After years of the communist regime, domestic war and isolation, Cambodia was reunited under the monarchy in 1993. Since then it has seen rapid economic progress. Nowadays, Cambodia has one of the best economic records in Indochina. Apparently, a part of this success is built by minority Chinese-origin people who run their small businesses all over the country, and keep business contacts with China. Here, a family-run grocery shop in the rudimentary area of Battambang city. Formerly a train station, this part of the city is inhabited by poor families that adopted old railway buildings for homes, shops and small enterprises. Despite their poverty, people still find happy moments in their lives and hope for the better future. Increasing interest among tourists in Cambodia as a tourist destination can help.
