The California fan palm, Washingtonia filifera, is native to the desert regions of southwest United States down to Baja California, Mexico. The `filifera` part of its names refers to the threads it produces. These plants are good to have in areas prone to lots of fires, as the charring of the trunks from the fires seem to make them grow stronger and better.
