The California buckeye, Aesculus californica, is in fact native to California, as well as the southwest portion of Oregon, just north of California.
Although this is an attractive tree, it is also very poisonous, and not just to humans and animals, but to honeybees as well. Because of this, it is important to not plant this too close to trees that do attract honeybees.
The wood does, however, make some good hand tools.
