The Blackshouldered Kite Elanus caeruleus is distributed throughout Africa except the Sahara, Iberia, and tropical Asia. Its habitat is bushveld, savanna, woodland and grasslands. It perches on dead trees or poles from where it hunts. The blackshouldered kite hovers over, and drops on its prey with feet extended. It feeds on rodents, small birds, reptiles and insects. The Blackshouldered kite's flying action looks like that of a gull's.
