Groot Constantia manor house in Cape Town, South Africa. Groot Constantia, the finest surviving example of Cape Dutch architecture and one of South Africa’s foremost historical monuments tourist attractions dates back to 1685. It is situated on the Cape Peninsula overlooking False Bay. Groot Constantia has been producing wine for more than three centuries. In 1685, Simon van der Stel, the later governor of the Cape, was granted land for a farm, which he named Groot Constantia. When he died in 1712, the property was divided and a smaller farm created around the homestead and its outbuildings. The vineyards are tucked in the steep valley on the eastern side of Table Mountain. The name Constantia is irrevocably linked to the most famous wines to be made in South Africa.
