San Francisco has a rich history of music and musical entertainment going back to the Gold Rush era. This really became a very big industry during the late 1950's when home televisions were becoming more common, and people can see in their own home many of the new pop music icons. And more and more of these pop music icons were from right here in San Francisco. To commemorate this, then mayor Willie Brown in 1997 kicked off the community effort of placing plaques in the Civic Center area to the individuals and groups who have made San Francisco their home, this cities version of Hollywoods Walk of Fame . The Bammie, which stands for Bay Area Music, hosts their own awards, was awarded to Bill Graham. Having been born in Berlin into a Jewish family during the rise of the Nazis, his family was able to get him out just in time, and he first landed in New York City. Having a sister already living near San Francisco,he had reason to move there, and soon attended a free concert in Golden Gate Park. This concert was one of the productions of Chet Helms, who he met there,as well as the San Francisco Mime Troupe, both of these would change him forever. Starting by promoting a benefit concert for the Mime Troupe,he would soon be sponsoring more and bigger events both in San Francisco and New York,as well as around the world. As seen 23 March 2023.
