The Zhangye danxia mountains are known in english as the rainbow mountains. They have earned their chinese name from their location just outside Zhangye in Gansu, western China. Their English name comes from the fact that they have layers of different colors, making them appear rainbow-patterned. Danxia mountains are found only in China and are internationally considered as geological oddities.
