Stock Photo: Yellow Pollen Baskets On A Carpenter Bee With Its Head Inside A Trumpet Vine Flower

ID 289675505 © Lindalombardo | Megapixl.com

This Carpenter Bee is busy collecting pollen from deep within an orange Trumpet Vine flower. Its hairless, shiny abdomen is visible and so are its yellow pollen baskets on its back two legs. The orange flower has been chewed on a bit. The green in the background is the Trumpet Vine leaves. Carpenter Bees collect pollen and also feed on nectar, just like Honey Bees. They do not feed on wood, despite their name. Their scientific classification is as follows - Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Arthropoda Class: Insecta Order: Hymenoptera Family: Apidae Genus: Xylocopa. To me, they are just big, lovable bees. The males have no stings. You can identify the males by their yellow faces. Female Carpenter Bees will sting, but only if threatened.
