Brown rot fungi helps decay wood by decomposing carbohydrates in the wood. This leaves a darker, modified lignin with a brown coloration. What remains has very little strength, resulting in excessive shrinkage and cubic checking typical of brown-rotted wood. It is called “cubical†brown rot for that reason.
