The Women of the Wall attempted to pray as a group at the Kotel, Judaism's holy site.Religious authorities however, banned them from doing so. The women then moves together outside the Dung Gate, part of the 'Old City' wall and resumed their service March, 1989. The Dung Gate was built from 1538-1540 and the entrance leads directly to the Western Wall, or Kotel. This gate also goes by the names of the Mograbi Gate and the Gate of Silwan. The women's cause was taken up by moderate and liberal elements of Israeli and non-Israeli Jews throughout the world, but has met stubborn opposition in the decades since this image was made.
