The fortified town of Mont-Dauphin, built by Vauban from 1693, subsequently altered and improved throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, is inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. Past its pink marble walls, there are the barracks where the soldiers of King Louis XIV lived, the bartizans where they were on watch, the powder store and the arsenal where they kept their guns. Wickerwork gabions are visible here. These were used like sandbags by a besieger as they advanced their trenches toward a fortress. In this case they and nearby trenches were dug in 2007 to try to study siege techniques.
