White Island Whakaari, NZ’s only active marine volcano. Whakaari sits offshore from Whakatane in the Bay of Plenty on the North Island of New Zealand. The island, is a giant, barren moonscape streaked with iron oxide reds and vivid sulphur whites and yellows with steaming cracks in the ground, bubbling pools and roaring gas fumeroles.
