Venice, capital of the Veneto region in northern Italy, is made up of more than 100 small islands in a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea. The city has no roads, only canals (such as the Grand Canal), full of Gothic and Renaissance palaces. In the central square, Piazza San Marco, are St. Mark's Basilica, covered in Byzantine mosaics, and the bell tower, overlooking the city's red roofs.
